Dr. Srirup Chatterjee, MS, FRCS
Director, Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Mission Hospital, Durgapur, India
Dr. Chatterjee works closely with SPARSH to make surgical treatment for CHD possible for children from extremely disadvantaged families. He graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune in the state of Maharashtra in western India and obtained his Master's degree in Surgery from the University of Delhi.
Then he left for the UK to pursue his dream of becoming a heart surgeon. Within 10 months he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and for 9 years he dedicated himself to learning the art and science of heart surgery, working in major teaching hospitals and under world famous surgeons such as Sir Donald Ross and Sir Magdi Yacoub.
In 1989, at the age of 36, he forsook a career in the UK and returned to his beloved native city of Calcutta where he has been working now for more than ten years. During this time he has developed numerous cardiac surgical programs in the city.
He has taken great pains to train new generations of surgeons and now many heart surgery units in Calcutta and in western India are headed by surgeons trained by him. Among his credits is his success in dealing with complex heart conditions and those with serious complications.
He is part of the pioneering effort in India of doing coronary bypass surgery without the use of a heart lung machine. But he has a special love of taking care of children with heart disease. He was one of the first surgeons in eastern India to deal with complex congenital heart disease.
Outside of work Dr. Chatterjee enjoys doing crosswords or curling up with a good book. He plays tennis regularly and endures a permanent frustration regarding his backhand. His childhood love of the mountains has persisted and each year he regularly treks in the Himalayas, spending a few precious days away from phone connectivity.
